One is a filtration media, usually used for the removal of iron and manganese compounds. It is an efficient and economical granular media. It can be used in pressure filters as well as in slow sand filters. The media enhances the reaction of iron compounds with dissolved oxygen in the water as a catalyst. The dissolved iron present in ground waters is usually in the form of ferric bicarbonate due to the excess of free carbon dioxide and can not be filtered. As a catalyst, the media together with the dissolved oxygen in the water convert Fe + 2 into Fe +3 form and the formed ferric hydroxide can precipitate and be easily filtered. Due to the physical properties of the media, only the water is backwashed and the precipitated compounds can easily be expelled. At the same time, since it is not dissolved in water or consumed during iron recovery, it provides much economic advantage compared to other media.
